New Home (Renting)

There are many things you have to do when you are looking for a new place to live in.

First, it is important to find the right location and then make sure you check whether it is safe or not. I would advise to go by car around the streets several times on weekdays, weeknights and importantly, weekends and nights.

If you are happy with the location, look nearby shops so you don’t have to travel long distance as it will save money for bus and it can go straight to saving account. Do the same if you are going to college or university, unless you like walking.

Then concentrate on the property. Most importantly make sure you can afford the renting price, if the property is unfurnished then ask the landlord/agency to drop the price by e.g. £25, £50 or £75.

Find out if the property rent includes the bills or not and whether you have to pay council tax or not. As the law has changed recently in April 2013, so if the landlord is not covering it then you have to pay. However, some might able to get 25% discount but make sure you do research. For students, you don’t have to pay.

Last but not least, write down everything on a piece of paper or in a diary, exactly what you have to pay monthly and see if you can live with the amount is left for you to spend. Remember, you have to eat and minimum I would say £10 per week. I am not even mentioning girly shopping or weekend’s fun day out, etc.
